Chapter 10

Ivy

I couldn’t believe it. The call center hired me! I jumped around the house and squealed as tears rushed my eyes. Finally, a break in this massive storm. A full-time job with benefits that kicked in after my four-week training was complete. I started next week. In six days, I’d be an employed woman pulling enough money to provide for my son.

“Thank you,” I said to no one in particular.

The phone in my hand rang and I picked it back up. And I heard how frantic the babysitter’s voice was on the other end. Something about Donnie not being hungry, and then she mentioned the word “fever.”

I grabbed my things and was out the door in a heartbeat.

I scooped up Donnie and took him straight to the urgent care in town. He was burning up, and there was drainage leaking from his ear. It didn’t take much time at all in the doctor’s office before he was diagnosed with a sinus and an ear infection. Which meant more money for the antibiotics. The doctor gave him some Tylenol for the fever and his first dose of antibiotics in the office, then sent me off with an address for the drugstore that would have the prescription ready in an hour.

I needed to get Donnie home and bundle him up.

I raced home and carried my son inside. I headed straight for the couch, plucking a fuzzy blanket off the back of it. I wrapped him up and laid him down, stroking his hair from his face.

And all the while, Theo was there, taking measurements in the kitchen for something.

“Ivy?” he called out.

“Just a second,” I said breathlessly.

I heard his footsteps lumber into the living room, and I sighed.

“What can I do to help?” he asked.

I shook my head. “It’s nothing. We’re fine.”

“Ivy.”

“Theo.”

“Let me help you,” he said.

I sighed again. “There’s a prescription being filled for Donnie at the pharmacy in town. I need to go get it.”

“I can pick it up for you, if you want me to. I haven’t taken my lunch break, so I can technically take it anytime.”

“It’s already being filled. I just need someone to swing by and get it,” I said.

“Consider it done,” he said.

I felt his hand come down onto my shoulder, and I almost broke down crying. One step forward, two steps back. I’d be paying off this doctor’s visit for months to come. I kept a close eye on Donnie while he slept, wiping away at his ear and his nose as they both continued to drain. The medicine finally kicked in and I felt his fever breaking, so I dabbed at the sweat on his brow.

And before I knew it, Theo was coming back through the front door.

“Does he need any right now?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Not until he gets up.”

“Let me get a cool washcloth, then. It’ll help with the heat in his neck.”

I nodded softly as Theo backtracked, returning with a damp cloth for me to use. I smoothed it over Donnie’s skin, watching the red slowly dissipate against his neck.
